Devon D. Harris tells us about the fires burning within:

Even with close-up shots, it is impossible to see the boiling cauldron of intensity that exists at the bobsled start. The steely resolve etched on the athletes’ faces and hidden behind their helmets foretells the tremendous power that only becomes apparent when they push the 650 pound sled with a little help from gravity and without the use of any mechanical motor, accelerating from zero to speeds in excess of 80 mph in less than 15 seconds. Only by using this smoldering fire of emotion welled up inside can they accomplish such a feat. Although the sled is heavy and the journey down the icy chute treacherous, the burning desire to perform at their very best easily provides the motivation they need to act in such a forceful and decisive way. The actions of the athletes on a bobsled run, or in any other sport for that matter, demonstrate that if you set out to achieve significant goals and you want it badly enough, you will eventually get it. If you have this same hot fire burning within, this same unrivaled motivational force, it will help you to overcome the negative inertia in your life, get past the obstacles and fears that impede you, and thrust you resolutely towards your goals.

Motivation is internal combustion

The study of human motivation is one of the most complex areas of social science. Motivation–’motive in action’ –is, according to noted author of Think Like A Winner, Dr. Walter Staples, the “personification of a goal being strived for, the pursuit of something deemed desirable and worthwhile.” Some seem to think that motivation is derived from the “carrot and stick” philosophy. In other words, people only act because of external forces which promise rewards or punishments for their actions. While the carrot and the stick provide motive for action, such methods prove to have only a temporary effect. REAL motivation comes from within. It flows naturally from having a dream. Human beings are naturally motivated by challenging goals and dreams.

Motivation is red hot desire

The intensity of the competition, the electric energy of the crowds and the love of country all serve as fuel for the athlete, propelling him/her in the pursuit of personal goals. High achievers are fiercely ambitious and this creates a burning desire–”burning fuel in the furnace of achievement”– which compels them to achieve.

Here is one of my favorite stories from the life of Socrates: The great ancient Greek philosopher could often be found in the Athenian market place dispersing his seeds of wisdom. After one of his lessons, a young man approached him and asked how he could get wisdom. Socrates invited the young man over to a nearby lake where they waded into about four feet of water. Without warning Socrates grabbed the young man’s head and plunged it under the water. At first he didn’t resist, thinking that it was some kind of test. However, as Socrates continued to hold him under, he began to struggle and desperately tried to free himself. Although small in stature, Socrates was very strong and continued to hold the young fellow underwater while he panicked and struggled and gasped for air. Finally, Socrates released him and said “When you desire wisdom with the same intensity that you desired to breathe, then nothing can stop you from getting it.” The same is true with your goals: If your desire is intense enough, nothing can stop you.

Motivation is the compelling reason

Motivation isn’t just a feel-good sensation, but a driving force which compels you to act and provides the energy you need to do the work it takes to attain a goal. This driving force to achieve your goals is propelled by one word-WHY? Why are your goals important to you? Why do you want to achieve them? The reasons differ for everyone, but could range from economic incentives to a desire for recognition to self-development, to name just a few.

Noted German Philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm once wrote, “A man can bear any What if he has a big enough Why.” When you have a big enough reason for achieving your goals, you develop an intensity of purpose that dwarfs the obstacles and challenges in your way. If your reasons WHY are big enough, they become uplifting and inspiring and drive you onward. If your reasons are big enough and your belief solid enough your success is virtually guaranteed.

Keep on Pushing!

J Seymour asked:

Developing enough gym motivation is an important component to your exercise plan. Motivating yourself can give you the will to follow your fitness routine. This emotion is a necessary component in gymnastics or less challenging tasks.

Focus

When you use self-hypnosis, you develop more focus on the effects of your efforts. Exercise is a just as much a mental activity as it is a physical one. Keeping this in mind, you can see how you can use your brain to power your body. When you put your focus on your objectives in goals, your gym motivation increases significantly.

When you exercise with gym motivation and focus, also begin to think thorough your muscles. This entails putting yourself in the frame of mind to focus on each muscle as you use it in your routine. Instead of just going through the motions, you are actively engaging your mind and muscles in your workout routine.

Visualization

Visualization is an extremely important component in gym motivation. Your gym motivation can improve when you imagine your results. The main objective in this realm is to motivate you through your clear picture of the desired results. You will work out more effectively when you have your goal in your mind.

Creating images is also helpful as you work out. You can imagine the excess energy that is stored in your fat cells burning away as you exercise. Maybe you want to focus on creating long, lean muscles. You may want to bench press more weight. Whatever your desire is, you can picture it in your mind.

Gym Motivation and Process

Self-hypnosis helps you enjoy the process rather than worrying about perfection. You become more concerned with seeing the smaller intervals of results rather than overnight success that is typical of many other approaches that offer quick fixes.

Embracing the process of working out to achieve smaller goals and objectives is a very important component for a number of reasons. You can put your energy into realistic goals rather than in perfection. When you see small results, you are pleased to see that you are moving in the right direction.

Motivating through the Subconscious

Working through the subconscious mind is very effective when developing gym motivation. You are more apt to adopt new habits when you address these changes in the subconscious mind.

You may have inner doubt and a lack of self-esteem that works against your progress. These issues need to be addressed on a subconscious level because you might not be consciously aware of them. Taking away the negativity can help spur you into feeling more motivated.

This process allows you to take on your fitness challenges without putting conscious effort into it. You automatically follow through with the right pattern of thought fueled with motivated emotion. This combination is the perfect mixture of ultimate success.

As you become more aware of your body, you can work out more effectively. You learn how to imagine yourself at your goal while enjoying the process of reaching this goal. Each step in the right direction brings you a great feeling of satisfaction. Gym motivation can be tapped in the subconscious.

Michael J asked:

Self motivation originates from many sources – the need or desire to achieve a personal goal, an emotional (and often life-changing) event such as divorce or death in the family, or even a true internal determination to “be the best you can be”. This article will focus on ways to make self motivation more real for yourself.

What emotion drives each human being to realize his or her goals is personal. What is self motivation for one person will not necessarily be motivational for another. While there are an infinite number of motivating factors, among some of the most common are recognition, influence, internal drives and profit, or personal material success. It all boils down to a person’s motivational ability to embrace the emotion behind his personal goal.

The spark of self motivation is always personal. However, there are certain motivational methods that everyone can count on to ensure that they will achieve their personal goals. One of the primary methods of motivation is to make a commitment to yourself and your personal desire. Try writing down your goal, or sharing it with others – many people find that this keeps their motivation strong. Employ your emotions to keep yourself on track – this is key!

If you want to make sure you continue to focus on your personal goal, you need to try benchmarking. You’ll find benchmarking to be a motivational tool in that you can see the progress you’ve made, which makes you want to continue making progress. A daily journal can also be a tool which helps you maintain momentum. By reading back over the entries and seeing how far you’ve come, your hope of reaching your ultimate goal becomes more of a reality.

Organizing and splitting your personal goals into smaller tasks or parts aids you in curbing your feeling as well as from being overwhelmed. For example,if your major personal goal is to reduce the debt you might focus on little things such as “reducing the grocery budget to 20$ a week” or “Tracking your receipts and review them regularly” these might help you in achieving your personal goal slowly but more steadily.

Perhaps the most important step in any personal journey is rewarding oneself for improvement and progress. This will ensure that the personal self motivation remains high. Any journey requiring self motivation is difficult – you are working toward change, which is difficult in itself. Use motivation concepts, such as celebrating the smallest successes. Just make sure your celebrations don’t counter your goal – for example, if you are trying to lose weight, don’t celebrate by having a slice of cake.

In the end, you need to give yourself a break. Do not let the wrong emotions cloud your judgment; do not be consumed with false expectations. Your initial efforts will not be your last or final efforts – you do not need to get it right the first time! Everyone, including you, is bound to slip now and again, but that doesn’t mean failure. Remember – self motivation is yours and it’s personal – and your goals will come to fruition in due time.

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this” It’s time to transform Hip-Hop back to its original state (the art form of expression for the financially challenged) Hip-Hop represents creativity in its purest form. Unfortunately, just like the soul of man, Hip-Hop has been sold and poisoned. The result is DEATH. That’s right, believe it or not, Hip-Hop is dying. In the Bible (Genesis 3:4) The soul of man was sold based on the promise that “you shall NOT surely die” Today, if you pass by any cemetery, you see that the evidence of that LIE continues to grow and if you take a good look at Hip-Hop today you will see signs of death as well. “BEEF” in the industry has gone way beyond the “Rap Battle” stage to the point of creating division in our nation and the violent deaths of many talented artists.

As we reach the “anything to sell records” phase, lyrical content has been degraded and the art form in general has been commercially “sold out” The only thing that has maintained any real continuity is the beat of which over-sampling is beginning to take away from any real creativity or talent being involved. The “promise” Hip-Hop once made to the ghetto is being replaced by a curse.

The GOOD NEWS is that God provided a cure for death (John 3:16) AND We believe such a cure is possible for Hip-Hop if we come together and work on it (Hebrews 6:10-12)….
THIS IS THE HIP-HOP TRANSFORMATION MOVEMENT!!!

Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD asked:

Everyone has moments when self-doubts, worry about accomplishments, and rumination about self-worth or intrusive thoughts float through our mind when facing a demanding task. Although, you are highly focused, tenacious, and conscientious towards your goals these fleeting moments can hamper your goal achievement.

When you are diligent and meticulous in the pursuit of your goals, reflect on your accomplishments to remind yourself to refocus your attention and reaffirm your intent.

Reminding yourself to do what needs to be done when conditions are most auspicious frees you to use your time wisely. Since there is truly nothing to worry, ruminate or fret about, no worrisome thoughts can derail your otherwise well-honed goal achievement process. The focus and dedication you exhibit while pursuing your purpose will guarantee that you leave no responsibility untended and ultimately you accomplish more than you expected.

Left unattended for what it is, self-doubt gives rise to various feelings and emotions which we then either cling to or resist, rather than processing our thoughts and acknowledging the misconceptions we have created. If we let the feelings pass through our awareness consciously, fully feeling and releasing them, self-doubt is avoided. The seeds of self-doubt are a result of early childhood experiences.

People with chronic self-doubt are merely those who have remained unaware of how to successfully release doubts and emotions. With such misconceptions, doubt is either deeply identified with as the ‘self’ or is seen as the ‘enemy.’ Yet, self-doubt is a very healthy benchmark for the need of change and growth.

Successfully embracing and resolving self-doubt, so that a new, higher understanding can be reached is the way to avoid it; as well as a way out. Self-doubt is not something to be avoided nor identified with. Self-doubt can be welcomed, embraced and intimately known as one does with a good friend, who shares their secrets of transforming that will change your life.

If anything can be referred to as the ‘cause’ of self-doubt then, it is the lack of consciousness of individuality. From the literature of historical Wisdom traditions such as Zen and Vedanta, to the annals of modern developmental psychology, evidence clearly shows that individuals who have evolved to the higher stages of consciousness (not ‘states of consciousness,’ which are only temporary) suffer less from troubling emotions. Consciousness is the only genuine long-term solution to dealing with self-doubt.

It is understood that this explanation is not the popular one, however, it is the one that can truly set you free. How? You might ask. The answer is: If you understand that you have in fact been creating absolutely everything you have been experiencing, you are able by acknowledging your responsibility to un-create [transform] any negative emotion which creates the plethora of so-called mental disorders. Responsibility without blame and constant surrender rather than resistance is the ‘way out.’ Self-doubt can be fully and permanently transformed—a.k.a.—Healed.

Peter Murphy asked:

Not everyone in this world can be a sales person with sales motivation. Sales motivation takes skills that are learned. There are many different types of sales people for millions of different products. But the one thing that they have in common is sales motivation.

Salespeople have to set goals on what types of businesses they are going after. They have to set goals on how much commission they will earn. Without goals, a sales person couldn’t keep their sales positions.

There are five great ways to generate sales:

1. Area canvassing

This type of selling is when the sales person goes to places where they know their particular product is in need and demand. They stop in and possibly leave a business card, and maybe even a sample of what they are selling.

This is a great strategy, because people like to put a name to a face when dealing with them in a business relationship.

2. Cold Calling

This is where the sales person makes phone calls to business that could possibly offer an opportunity for sales. This is a very impersonal approach that is not recommended.

3. Direct mailings

The sales person will make up flyers and brochures and send out to businesses that may need the product for sale. They may even send out a free sample for them to try.

4. E-mail solicitation

This strategy works if the sales person has contacts with the businesses that he/she is e-mailing. Otherwise, there is so much junk mail being sent over the Web that it might get deleted before it is even read.

5. Networking

This is by far the most effective way to sell a product. Networking is when the sales person gets leads through other people in this business and go from there.

This gets your name out there, and if a friend of a friend knows you, you will stand a bigger chance of getting in the door to sell your product.

Sales Motivation is like any other motivation. You must first set goals that are within your reach. After the goals have been set, then it is time to write down your objectives and steps to reach those desired goals.

The next step in obtaining sales motivation is to reward yourself when you do make a sale or obtain a new client.

A good sales person requires a positive attitude. They may have the door slammed on them many times throughout the day, however, they need to be able to maintain that outgoing personality to enable them to go on to the next place of business.

A sales person gets his/her motivation from the commissions that they make, along with the interaction with people and the actual challenge of the sale itself.

Jeanne May asked:

Motivation is an essential part of everything we do … it governs whether or not we will successfully achieve our goals and dreams throughout life.

Motivation is our desire or level of energy to do something. Our motivation comes from within us, it is our drive based on our desire to achieve something, to do something, or to become something. Motivation also comes from outside us e.g. other people, events, actions of others.

Motivation isn’t a constant — it’s normal to experience fluctuations in our motivation level at different times… sometimes our motivation is strong and at other times it’s hard to find!

When our motivation is strong, we complete tasks easily, successfully achieve our goals… we feel more positive about ourselves and what we are doing. Everything feels good.

When we struggle to find our motivation, things become more difficult… tasks take longer to complete, we find ourselves easily procrastinating, our confidence and self belief takes a hammering… our energy and vibration levels are low!

Although we can be motivated by others or external events, it is the motivation that comes with in us that really makes the difference in being successful.

There are many things we can do to keep our motivation going… to give ourselves a much-needed boost… to keep our motivational fire from going out:

set a goal that’s important and meaningful for you… a goal that will improve your life… a goal that excites you just thinking about it. Outline the necessary steps you need to take to achieve your goal and keep on that path! The more detailed your goal, the easier it is to keep motivated and on track if your motivation has taken a vacation, you feel lethargic and unable to get anything done, you are aware you’re procrastinating… set yourself a time limit to achieve something, to do something and stick with it until you have it completed. Make this a short time period e.g. 10 minutes, and stick with that task for the entire time. It’s important to set small time periods for yourself when experiencing low motivation read motivating books — read autobiographies of people you admire, look up to, people who have succeeded in some area of life. There are many motivational writers and motivational books are easily found on the net, library or bookshops listen to motivating audios — Some of my favourites include: Bob Proctor, Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield… download your favourites onto your IPod or burn a CD… and listen to them in the car while you’re driving, doing exercises, while you’re waiting on queues or for appointments… any time you have spare, play your motivational audio! write out a whole lot of motivational quotes… and put them throughout your home, workplace, and on your computer. When you find your motivation is low, read the quotes mix and socialise with people who themselves are motivated. It’s important to surround yourself with people you find motivating… when you do, your energy and vibrational level increases and this gives you the extra charge you need to achieve what you desire learn more information or new skills on subjects that inspire you — when you learn more about subjects you find enjoyable and inspiring, your motivation increases and you become more confident and self-reliant

Do you have difficulties at times getting motivated?

Jeff Herring asked:

Experiencing strong emotions is not uncommon. What is uncommon is applying these emotions to motivate you to change and grow.

Having said that, here are five emotional states that can change your life, if you act on them:

commitment, desire, disgust, decision and focus.

Commitment

If you are committed there is always a way, and usually more than one way. The key phrase here is if you are committed. Commitment to a relationship, exercise, career or achieving goals means that no matter what, I’m sticking to it, I’m seeing this through.

One of the nice things is that when you are committed to something, you seem to find yourself involved with other committed people.

The late singer-songwriter Harry Chapin said “Whether it’s to a cause, a relationship or something else, when you hang out with people who are committed, you hang out with the folks with the live hearts, the live minds, the live eyes.”

Applied to marriage, this notion of commitment is much more than just being committed to avoiding divorce. It’s the commitment that you will do everything in your power to make the relationship a great place to be.

Desire

“How bad do you want to beat Edgewater?” my high school football coach screamed in my face when he caught me going a little too easy one day in practice. That one has stayed with me because he was right: The amount of desire I had that day was showing up in the actions I chose to take.

Desire is reflected in your actions. Desire with little or no action is not worth much. So ask yourself frequently, “How much do I want this?”

Disgust

Disgust is not typically an emotion associated with positive change. Or is it?

Have you ever been disgusted with a situation, a relationship or yourself?

Most of us have, of course. But have you ever been so disgusted that you were motivated to change no matter what? Being sick and tired of being sick and tired with something can be a fantastic motivator for change when you decide “no more, not again, not ever!”

Decision

The root word for decision is incision, which means to cut. So when you decide, really decide, that something will be different in your life, you “cut off” any other possibility. And it’s reflected in your view of and attitude toward life.

Bill Marriott of Marriott Hotels said, “Failure? I’ve never encountered it. I just stumbled over a few temporary setbacks.”

That’s decision in motion.

Focus

Each one of us is bombarded every day with hundreds of things trying to get our attention. Focus is an emotional state that pulls together commitment desire, disgust and decision.

When I see people struggling with where they want to go, one of the first places I look is their power of focus. We tend to be pulled toward that which we focus on. Lack of focus usually equals lack of success and achievement.

Focus on all the distractions pulling for your attention, and you’re not likely to get where you want to go. Focus on where you want to go and you are likely to get there.

Commitment, desire, disgust, decision and focus.

Don’t just experience these emotional states, apply them to create the life you desire.

Jeff Herring asked:

As the story goes, there was once a farmer and his only son in the days just before the Civil War. Having only one horse, the farmer and son worked long hard days, sun up to sun down, just to get by, with nothing left to spare.

One day as the father and son plowed the fields, their horse got spooked and ran off. The son was devastated; “What bad luck, now what will we do?”

The father replied; “Good luck, bad luck, too soon to tell.”

The father and son continued to work the farm. Then one day their horse comes running back over the hill with 6 other horses. The son exclaimed, “What great luck, now we have all the horses we’ll ever need!”

To which the farmer replied; “Good luck, bad luck, too soon to tell.”

The next day as the farmer and son were working with the horses, one particulary difficult horse threw the son off his back and broke his leg. The son cried: “Oh father, I am so sorry, now you have to work the farm all by yourself. What bad luck!”

Once again the father replied: “Good luck, bad luck, too soon to tell.”

Several days later the Civil War broke out and all the able bodied young men were sent off to war. The farmer’s son, having a broken leg, was forced to stay at home.

After the leg had healed, the father had the only farm around with a son to help and seven horses to boot. They worked the farm and prospered.

Good luck, bad luck. It’s too soon to tell.

Perhaps.

Good luck, bad luck. It’s all in how you look at it.

Getting closer.

Good luck, bad luck. Depends on which one you choose and what you make of it.

Bingo. Absolutely. Now you got it!

At each stage of “bad luck” the farmer could have given up, which could have prevented the farmer and son from taking advantage of the “good luck” that came their way.

In this story, there at least three principles of success that allowed the farmer and son to prosper. Let’s take a look:

Responding vs reacting

At each turn of events, the son reacted. Reacting usually involves not thinking things through, operating with out enough information to make a good decision. The farmer, on the other hand responded to each event using his brain and the power of perspective. This allowed him to be “response – able, able to respond” to the events, both good and bad, that came his way.

Attitude

The son’s attitude was “things happen to us, and there is nothing we can do about it.” The farmer’s attitude was “things do happen, and then we happen to them. What we do with what happens is the difference that makes the difference.”

Filters

We all have “filters” in our thinking that determine how we see the world.

For the son, he filtered events into two categories, “this is either good for us or bad for us.” He had what I call “problem filters”, seeing only the bad in events, and how it effected him.

The father, on the other hand, had different filters. He had what I call “solution filters.” Whatever the events, he knew that a solution could be found in both “good luck and bad luck.”

It’s like the character Qui-Gon Jinn, played by Liam Neeson, says in the recent Star Wars installment when one solution does not work: “……another solution will present itself.” Now that’s a solution filter!

While they may not be runaway horses, broken legs and Civil Wars, we all have events in our lives that can either make us or break us. When we bring the tools of responding, attitude, and solution filters to these events, we have a much better chance of making them work for us and prospering as a result.
