Dr. Steve Tuggle asked:

Self motivation skills are essential if we are to enjoy success, fulfillment, and fitness throughout our life. We may benefit tremendously from gifted motivational speakers, books, and seminars. But if we are to continue to move forward and make progress in achieving our goals we must develop our own personal skills for staying motivated.

These are skills that can be learned and improved with time and effort. We never reach a point where we can stop honing these self motivation skills. As we become more skilled we are able to move forward more quickly and reach for even higher goals.

Improve Your Life With These Self Motivation Skills:

1. Take responsibility. Blaming others for your lack of motivation and inability to persevere in reaching goals is a waste of time. People who constantly blame their boss for their lack of motivation on their job will inevitably stay frustrated and unsuccessful in their work. Get in the habit of not letting other people’s words and actions have an impact on your motivation.

2. Stop procrastinating. This self-defeating habit can be devastating to your motivation and your ability to reach your goals.

3. Take action. There is a time to think and plan but then there it time for action. Nothing will happen until you take some action. Don’t allow yourself to be paralyzed by fear and indecision. Steps of action will lead to more and more motivation.

4. Stop comparing. Comparing yourself with others will inhibit your own personal growth and motivation. Focus on being the very best that you can be and allow others to do the same.

5. Eliminate negativity. We can get bombarded with negativity from friends, family, media, co-workers, and even our own thoughts. Negativity can kill out excitement and keep us from living a motivated life. Skillfully eliminating this negativity can be a great boost to our motivation.

6. Be realistic. After proper self-evaluation you should set goals that are attainable. Setting goals too far out of reach leads to frustration and depletes our energy and motivation. A common example of this is when people set weight-loss goals. You can only lose 1-2 pounds of fat each week. If you set a 10 pound goal you will become frustrated and defeated. Be realistic.

7. Make plans. Failing to plan is planning to fail. It’s an old saying but full of truth. When you follow a well-devised plan you will stay motivated.

8. Reward yourself. Take time to celebrate. Include those who helped you reach your goal. This will keep your motivation fresh and keep you moving forward.

Booker T. Washington once said, “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles overcome, while trying to succeed.” The reason why you want to do something is MOTIVATION. It is an eagerness and willingness to do something without needing to be told or forced to do it.” It encourages, inspires and develops a sense of Pride, Better Outlook and Build’s Self Esteem which is critical to the productivity at workplace.

According to Dr. Shilpa Moonot – Clinical Neuro Rehabilitation (London), “To build a high Motivation within yourself determine your greatest Motivator- Is it Money, Incentives, Bonus, Commission, Fame, Recognition which are External and Monetary benefits or Non-Financial Motivators like Pride, Sense of Achievement, Responsibility, Belief, Challenging and Interesting job, Respect which are Internal. The most powerful Motivation however comes from within, keep Smiling, be Enthusiastic, Cheerful and Considerate; it’s Contagious she added; to boost your self-confidence think win-win and not lose-lose.

Sir Winston Churchill has rightly said, “Kite rise highest against the wind not with it.” Failures and bouncing back are elements of Motivation. Failure is a Learning Tool that builds Confidence. People with high self-confidence typically have little fear of unknown, are able to stand up for what they believe in and have the courage to risk embracement. Sri Chinmoy, believes, “Your confidence-heart need not be the result of your yesterday’s success. Your confidence-heart can easily be the result of your implicit faith in tomorrow’s most beautiful dawn.” A man with Motivation shall not lose; only doubt will bring defeat.

Dictionary is the only place where Success comes before Work. Hard Work is the Price we must pay for Success. We can accomplish anything if we are willing to pay the Price. If you’re demotivated it shows in your work, the way you manage customers, superiors and subordinates, which creates an unproductive, inefficient and pessimist environment. Encourage an environment where everyone encourages everyone else. Develop Trust, Respect, Constructive Criticisms and an Open Channel of upward and downward Communication. Associate yourself with high motivators to be one.

Finally enjoy yourself and find areas of interest at your workplace. Have a clear short and long term goals. Be sober, kind, reliable and responsive; know exactly what’s expected from you and always meet your deadlines. As Richard Bach said, “The more I want to get something done, the less I call it work.” Finally remember the MOTIVATIONAL thoughts of Bessie Stanley on Success at Workplace,

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of junior;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a

Healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier

Because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

John Watson asked:

Since 1831, when it was founded, the French Foreign Legion has intrigued people all around the world. The heroism and endurance of the legionnaires has become a byword. Surely all of us can learn some powerful motivational lessons from these men. This article is based mainly on a recent conversation with one of them

A week or so after posting my article on ‘Motivation In The Legion’ on my website, I was honoured to receive an email from someone who has actually been a legionnaire. I was also pleased to find out that he liked the article.

I was even more pleased to discover that he was none other than Sgt. Glenn Ferguson who played a major role in the Channel 4 TV series about 12 volunteers who bravely or foolishly volunteered to undergo a month’s basic training in the North African desert in the style suffered by the great majority of legionnaires.

We talked later on the phone for about an hour about the program and Sgt. Glenn Ferguson’s own experiences both in the Legion and in the US army AIRBORNE Brigade Recon Team. I learned a lot about what motivates the Legion and the Legionnaires.

Sgt. Glenn Ferguson comes from Atlanta, Georgia in the USA but currently lives in France with his French wife and seven children. He is still only 37.

I asked him what had motivated him to join the Legion at the age of 19. He was not sure what to do at the time and was young and inexperienced (I think he said ‘stupid’)! He had heard the great stories of the Legion and had decided to go for it.

When I asked him what motivated him after he had joined the Legion, he replied instantly: ‘Fear’. I imagine that was not fear of the enemy but fear of the savage methods used by the Legion to discipline the often rebellious foreigners who joined their ranks.

Higher ranks in the legion were allowed to beat up lower ranks who showed a bad attitude. Most other armies do not allow this. The higher ranks can also use some painful drills and punishments in order to make recruits ready to accept discipline.

Interestingly, Sgt. Glenn Ferguson noticed that the men who spent most time in military prison for having a rebellious and arrogant attitude were British. However,he pointed out that not all the Brits in the Legion were bad and that he served with some great individuals who he would go to war with any time.

One British member of the training staff was Corporal Richard Sutter who had been in the Legion from 1990 to 1995.

At one point in the program, a volunteer challenged the Corporal to do the drill he was demanding that they do. Although I am sure the Corporal could easily have done the drill, he refused and pointed out that he had already paid his dues.

Experienced legionnaires have already been through hell once. No one has the right to ask them to go through it again. Sgt. Glenn Ferguson totally supported Corporal Richard Sutter in this view.

Another factor that motivated Sgt. Glenn Ferguson in the Legion was the fact that he hated to fail. All elite groups have a huge pride in the standards they achieve. They do not want people who only have a half hearted attitude to join them. A key saying that the Sergeant sent me by email was:

“If you didn’t come to be the best then stay with the other losers.”

Yesterday, I watched a trooper in the British Household cavalry being told off for a poor standard of turn out. At first glance, his gleaming uniform looked amazing but the officer was not willing to accept what he considered to be a standard which let down the British army.

The trooper put things right during the rest of the day by spending hours more working hard on polishing and cleaning.
Another of the Sergeant’s sayings fits this kind of attitude.

“You’re only as strong as your weakest link, so never lower the standard of the team.”

Sgt. Glenn Ferguson made sure that the volunteers were motivated by pure fear to do their very best. He told them that if they did not motivate themselves, he would do the job himself.

However, his aim was still to produce self-discipline. One of his favourite sayings is:

“Discipline is doing the right thing not only when you are being watched. It is also doing the right thing when no one is watching.”

At one point (and this was not shown in the TV program) Sgt. Glenn Ferguson got the volunteers out of their beds, blindfolded them, took them out into the desert and left them there to find their own way home!

This was not a punishment but a powerful lesson in self-sufficiency and building self-confidence. The Sergeant had already taught the volunteers the necessary skills to navigate their way home.

He was also keen to help the volunteers push their limits. Another of his sayings applies to this:

“If you never are shown that your limits can be pushed, you will never know how far you can really go.”

The limits of the volunteers were certainly pushed hard both physically and mentally. The hot desert air makes every long march much, much tougher. Even when they were in the home fort, one volunteer removed part of his uniform to be cooler. He was forced to wear his entire wardrobe for hours to teach him not to repeat the offence.

Two volunteers were buried up to their heads in the sand to teach them discipline. The punishment looked severe but Sgt Glenn Ferguson explained that it was even more severe than it looked.

The volunteers were not standing in a deep hole up to their necks; they were made to sit cross legged in a sitting position in a shallower hole. This would have been far more painful. They were temporarily paralysed when they were pulled out of the hole. One is reminded of the rack in the middle ages!

In another incident, the volunteers had to march out into the desert without water. In today’s world, this is unthinkable. Everyone carries a water bottle even in cool climates. But the Legion still has the attitudes of a different and far tougher world. To be fair, there were times when the volunteers were told by the medical staff that they must drink more water.

However, in this incident, the TV crew asked the Sergeant Chef Peter Hauser, to give the volunteers water or they would die. The Sergeant Chef gave a classic French Foreign Legion reply: “No water; let them die. We march.”

The motivational methods of the French Foreign Legion may seem barbaric but they produced results. They created a highly disciplined army of men and they developed individuals who knew that they could achieve and suffer far more than they believed possible. They had had their limits pushed way beyond their expectations.

Sgt. Glenn Ferguson believes so much in pushing your limits that he even trains his alsatian to push his limits. He points out that most dogs sit in their gardens sniffing their behinds and eating bones. His alsatian, however, is trained to jump higher and higher until he can jump over a ten foot wall! Talk about high standards!

Since the TV program was made one of the volunteers has trained with the Sergeant at his home in France and now has plans to apply to join the SAS.

Several of the volunteers have gained confidence and self-belief and had their lives turned around. The TV program tended to focus on those who dropped out of the program rather than those who achieved great things.

Fear can be a great motivator. Pushing yourself way beyond your normal limits is a great motivator. Pride in belonging to an elite group of people who give 100% is also a great motivator.
Discipline motivates you to do what is right whether someone is watching you or not.

These are just some of the motivational lessons the Legion can teach us.

My thanks to Sergeant Glenn Ferguson for giving me an hour of his time to learn first hand about the kind of motivation that makes the French Foreign Legion a legend all around the world.

Richard Romando asked:

Today every organization is realizing the importance of a harmonious working atmosphere, and making efforts to provide psychological counseling to its employees so that the spirit of teamwork does not die. Every organizational culture is a result of the values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors shared by the employees, and anyone can see this culture live in the language, symbols, stories, legends, and daily work atmosphere. Posters with motivational quotes are gaining importance day by day, as they are in some way contributing towards the transformation of the mindsets of employees.

Motivational posters are an inexpensive but effective way to communicate the purposes and priorities of an organization. Posters with spiritual, inspirational and motivational quotes inspire everybody to achieve their daily targets and objectives. In raising employees’ morale, the framed motivational posters are becoming very popular, and most corporate people are using them to get their message across.

There can be an altogether different theme and purpose of the motivational poster. In recent years many organizations are trying to put across the message of their mission, vision and core values statement through posters with beautiful graphics. The posters indirectly urge people to work in the spirit of teamwork and dedicate themselves completely to their work.

Posters with pictures like navigators in the middle of the sea, trying to see the island with their binoculars, expresses the organization’s vision and zeal to achieve their desired destinations or objectives.

Managers of many companies strongly believe that these posters are silent teachers. Explicitly, they might not seem to be of much importance, but in the long run they contribute to creating a positive atmosphere in the organization.

“Every artist was first an amateur.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

And Michael Jordan was not born a star. He was also just another child who motivated himself to be what he is today. He missed many shots, he lost many games, and yet he came back again and again. As the saying goes, success is not about never falling, but getting up every time we fall. But the problem with many of us is that we just don’t want to get up. We think that we are not like Michael Jordan, and that he is special while we are just common.

It is the internal demon that is our worst enemy, and he will try his best to make you not try again giving you all kinds of excuses, and you will give up. Then one day you will read a motivation article like this one and feel extremely motivated for a day or two. You even take a printout of motivational quotes and post them on your cubicle, use as a screensaver, and then you just go on with life. No amount of a motivational quotes or articles will help motivate unless you fight the internal demon and start self motivating yourself.

Here are a few steps for self motivation:

1) You should first accept the fact that no great men were born great, and they were just ordinary persons who worked hard and did extra-ordinary things. Unless you accept that all men are equal, and that some are better only marginally, your internal demon will always win and you will find it hard to get up every time you fall.

2) You should have trust in yourself.
Unless you learn to trust yourself, you will find it hard to try again after a failure. You must forget the fact that you failed once and dismiss that failure as a random occurrence. It will help to remember that every great men failed many times before they began to suceed.

3) Be well prepared.
Unless you are prepared, it is no point trying. Put in more effort in your preparation before you try again. If you are well prepared you have benchmark and even if you fail again, you will know where to put your efforts in next time.

4) Be willing to change.
To be successful one must be willing to change, and once you are willing to change, you must be prepared to change.

5) Do what successful people does.
Successful people does those things that most people don’t want to do. One easy example is working hard, or respecting other person. You must make these things a habit, and when they become a habit, they will drive away your internal demons.

6) Practice makes one perfect.
And if you are are perfect, it will motivate you to get better and better, for perfection has no limits.

Edvard Kurnik asked:

Transformational leaders are very high in motivation and energy and their focus is not the short term goals, infact they are more inclined towards achieving higher goals. Here, though the leaders and followers can have different purposes in the beginning but more than often they try to fuse these purposes to pursue a much higher goal.

Transformational leaders might reflect some trait of charismatic leaders like being able to influence the people in an emotional way but they are different from charismatic leaders.

The transformational leaders display high risk taking ability. Common people hesitate to take risk as they fear failure. High risk ensures high gain; these leaders are aware of this fact so they never hesitate in taking risk.

Infact they are able to convince their followers to move ahead on his ideas, and his personal magnetism too ensures that the followers follow their leaders command.

They are excellent communicators; they are effectively able to establish a heart-to-heart relationship with their followers; the followers imbibe the message of their leaders and are able to cross that extra mile with great energy and extraordinary enthusiasm to fulfill the dreams of their leaders.

These leaders do not hesitate to recognize the efforts and contribution of their followers and are ready to appreciate them for their efforts. Transformational leaders are able to infuse a great amount of enthusiasm in their followers; their motivating gestures fill the atmosphere with lots of energy.

Their followers always appear self-confident and self-motivated. These leaders always look ahead and have a great vision; they guide their followers towards those visions. Slowly and steadily they develop a mass base; they keep their followers hooked to them by following what they preach.

They display great amount of personal integrity which makes them trustworthy. The followers start relating their own dreams with the dreams of their beloved leaders. They are very proactive and always lead from the front. They occupy the central position during their course of action and accept all the responsibilities.

These leaders are always accessible to their followers, and they are highly committed; infact their passion ignites even the young minds to follow them.

One of the negativity associated with the transformational leaders is that their energy and enthusiasm can also mislead the general masses which can be disastrous for the society.

Transformational leaders develop a vision and believe that they can transform their vision into reality but fail to analyze the efforts which would be required during the course of action.

Many of the followers who get inspired to join may soon find the vision unrealistic and unachievable; feeling cheated they would soon leave these leaders.

These leaders always want to transform the society but it’s not always possible to bring a great change in the society; this causes a lot of frustration in these leaders.

However, despite of some shortcomings everyone would agree that we are indeed indebted to these transformational leaders for making constructive changes in the society and showing people the right path.

Shanat Kuphur asked:

The importance of the word named “motivation” conveys lot more than it seems to have. Anything and everything that have to be done won’t be materialized unless and until it is supplemented by the crucial entity named “motivation”. Motivation is not something that could be manufactured, instead it has to come from within, rather, has to be cultivated.

It won’t ever be an animated reality if I mention that it is because of this motivation that world progresses even a fraction of a second. So, in a micro sense, each human needs to be motivated for every deed of his to be done. If you understand that the greatest or the ever discussed topic in psychological arena is motivation related aspects, its importance is conveyed and taken for granted.

Though we state that motivation is more or less a mental concern, it should not be stated that the physical well being and fitness have hardly any role to play. Moreover it could be stated that, motivation related problems are cancerously growing among the youth. This is so severe a scenario that they have to have a serious look at the mental status, physical well being and attitude. People, who are addicted to habits like smoking, alcohol consumption etc, should treat motivation as a pivotal entity in recovering themselves from those habits.

People who find it difficult to change their habits or people who continuously fails in motivating themselves to move forward to achieve their desired goal would find hypnosis as an effective solution. Hypnosis could very well be stated as a process of changing the well settled habitual mental status of people which help them in uprooting the so called status, to lead a better living. In whatever one does, motivation holds the key. The situations could be as diverse as it can be like meeting the deadline when given a job, stopping a bad habit like smoking or consumption of alcohol, reducing the weight drastically etc..

It should be reiterated that motivation finds its root in beliefs. If you have a strong faith in yourself, or if you have strong belief that some particular thing could be done within the stipulated time, you starts working hard on it. You are motivated to toil hard since you have the faith or belief that, it could be done. But at any point of time, if your belief or faith got hurt by any means, you are letting yourself down and where is your motivating factor? You find it difficult to dictate the terms for yourself. Here, hypnosis is so relevant. Statistical analysis shows that over 90% of people can be hypnotized. To motivate yourself, hypnosis can very well help you for sure. In this technologically advanced world, you only need to be choosy in selecting the media you need to get hypnotized. Compact disks, MP3 s etc are available in the market which essentially deals with hypnosis related to motivation issues.

It is so amazing to study that, which attribute of human mind caused him to be under motivated; the same attribute helps him to prepare himself for hypnosis, and come out successfully. That attribute, being the delicacy of human mind forms the leanest of all the bridges between an under motivated and a motivated mind set.

Tracy Brinkmann asked:

“Motivation is the spark that lights the fire of knowledge and fuels the engine of accomplishment. It maximizes and maintains momentum” – Zig Ziglar

Well I can think of no better way to fire up this article than with that very quote. It speaks so well to the truism of motivation being the enabler of our success. As you go through that article, and any other article the causes you a moments pause about your direction, ask yourself this question: Do you merely drift along the current of life like a leaf on a stream? Pushed along the ebb and flow without choice or reason. Or do you take change of your direction? Know this, the answer to this question has a major impact on your life, (both personal and professional) because life is filled with ups and downs. The trip along life’s road is loaded with pit-fills, quick stops, blind turns and incomplete paths. Then, on occasion after our trails, we are blessed with a period where there are smooth paved avenues, lined with beautiful trees and no obstacles. However, this to shall pass and the next barrier, obstacle and challenge will offer itself up.

Motivation is a critical ingredient to our resilience and ability to get back up when we have been knocked down (or out). When you are down the right attitude and motivation can and will be the difference between responding positively or reacting negatively. This difference has many impacts personal, professional and financial.

Let me give you simple example. Some years ago I moved to the suburbs of the great city of Atlanta. This growing metropolis has the same challenges around traffic that I’m sure most of you face if you have to journey into a major metropolitan area during peak traffic periods. Even though I am about the most upbeat and positive guy that you will meet (short of Zig of course). I have to admit that occasionally I have uttered discouraging comments about the traffic. Whacked the steering wheel of my car and barked out orders to the driver in front of me. All of which was a pure waste of time. Because after all of my banter, the traffic was still there, and so was I. However, now my emotions were running on the negative side so any little thing just irritated them all the more.

Now my typical commute can be about an hour each way. That’s two hours a day, five days a week, bringing us to about 500 hours a year with vacations etc. If I were to make this barking, whacking banter a daily routine, I would certainly be flirting with potential accidents as I challenged drivers around me in my irritated state. Let’s not forget the physical effects that these negative emotions bring about (headaches, high blood pressure etc.)

No for me the obvious thing to do is take advantage of this time to in a more positive manner. I have a full library of audio education and motivation on tape and CD. As soon as I get in the car to start my commute I drop in my tape or CD and I’m off down the road to work, and up the road to success. I have reviewed the works of Zig Ziglar, Anthony Robbins, Brain Tracy, Napoleon Hill, and Dale Carnegie. I have taken 100s of hours in personal/professional development courses in subjects like e-commerce, goal setting, creativity, growing IQ the list goes on and on. This automobile university has served me well in numerous ways. Paying off in the motivation that has sparked ideas I have turned into actions in the real world.

FACT – the tapes I listened to during these drive times never once said, “Tracy here is the solution to your problem.” Some of my tapes gave me information others gave me some positive thoughts to ponder. A person, who wants to maximize their life, will schedule regular motivational input and regular educational input. This input will be about their job, about who they are or who they want to be, or even about something entirely new and unrelated to anything they do currently. These injections of new concepts, ideas, confidence-building thoughts, and opinions will energize you, building your momentum and your motivation, thus bringing you up emotionally! You learn more when you are up; you perform better when you are up and people will react to you more positively when you are up. So right now is the time to take out some motivational insurance. Take out your scheduler and schedule yourself regular intervals of motivational and educational input. Do this now – it will pay off in big rewards!

Lets take a look at the dictionary for the definition of motivation (motivate, motive)

Mo-ti-vate to provide with, or affect as, a motive; incite.

Mo-tive 1 an inner drive, impulse, etc. that causes one to act; incentive. 2 of or causing motion

Combining your regular infusion of motivational material with your educational materials will provide the drive and impulse (motivational material) to set into motion the new concepts, ideas, confidence-building thoughts, and opinions (educational material) that will energize you. This will further build momentum and motivation, bringing you up higher! Are you seeing the pattern here?

You can not stand in front of the stove of life and say “Stove give me some heat and I’ll put some wood in you!” You will have to put some work into it first by stoking the fire that will warm your motivational soul.

Let me share with you 10 things you can do when you can’t seem to get motivated.

1. Get some rest. One of the major de-motivators in today’s society is lack of rest. Go to bed an hour early so you catch up on your rest. Or you could take a nap instead. A good night’s sleep is essential to your level of effectiveness and motivation.

2. Get some exercise. Take a walk, a jog, workout or whatever level of physical exercise you can partake in. Exercise gets your endorphins flowing and this will do wonders for how you feel. Not to mention you’ll be doing your body some good to. (be sure not to hurt yourself)

3. Tap the sap. Figure out what is sapping your energy and get rid of it.

4. Pamper yourself. Take some time for you. This could be a mini-vacation (a few hours to a day or two) Get away from everything and enjoy yourself. Clear your head and come back refreshed.

5. Review your goals. Review and remember why you are doing what you’re doing. If you decide now is not the time for a goal, them dump the goal. Remember you can always renew that goal again when the time is right.

6. Play with it. Get out a calendar and leave yourself some cute notes or pictures (sticker work great here) about your goals and activities. Send yourself letters in the mail to keep you up and charged. Here is a way you can use those free things on the net. Places like Yahoo.com have free calendars that will send you notes and reminders. Make them fun!

7. Use trusted advisers as a cheering section. You can have them send you notes (see #6 above). You want them to motivate you but don’t let them white wash the facts. Constructive criticism is key tool here. That way you are motivated to grow or keep growing.

8. Find your song. We all have a song or songs that move us. Make yourself a tape or CD full of these motivational songs. High-energy songs are best whether they are Bach or Backstreet Boys as long as they move YOU

9. Listen to your motivational tapes/CDs. Your car does not have to be the only place you go to get motivated.

10. Hire some help. I hired a maid for my wife. I have a martial arts trainer and a personal success coach too. These coaches and trainers can help you accomplish those things you can’t handle alone.

Motivation enables you to effectively use not only recently acquired knowledge, but also it will ignite, incite and enable you put in motion, things that you thought were long ago forgotten. Science has shown us that inspirational information conveyed in an enthusiastic manner activates the pituitary gland, which releases neurotransmitters that enhances our energy, creativity, and endurance. Keep your motivation up with your regularly scheduled motivational injections (articles like this one are a good start). Keep your pool of knowledge growing so you have more wood to stoke that fire with.

“Your motivation will positively fuel your attitude. Your positive attitude builds the confidence necessary to be persistent. And of course we already know persistence pays off.” – Tracy Brinkmann

Richard Romando asked:

Motivation can be defined in a number of ways. Generally, it is defined as a driving force that initiates and directs behavior. In other words, motivation is a kind of internal energy which drives a person to do something in order to achieve something. It is a temporal or dynamic state within a person which is not concerned with his/her personality. There are different types of motivation such as achievement motivation, affiliation motivation, competence motivation, power motivation, and attitude motivation.

Motivation is based on three specific aspects such as the arousal of behavior, the direction of behavior, and persistence of behavior. Arousal of behavior involves what activates human behavior and direction of behavior is concerned with what directs behavior towards a specific goal. Persistence of behavior is concerned with how the behavior is sustained.

Various studies have been conducted to understand the different motives that drive a person to success. Motives are categorized into three: homeostatic motives, nonhomeostatic motives, and learned or social motives. Almost all the motives belong to one or more of these three groups.

Motives such as thirst, hunger, respiration, and excretion are included in homeostatic motives. Nonhomeostatic motives include required activities such as seeking shelter and curiosity about the environment. Curiosity, a desire for novelty, power, achievement, social affiliation, and approval are considered as learned motives or social motives.

Motivation is essential to be successful in any endeavor you undertake. It can be positive or negative, subtle or obvious, tangible or intangible. It is very important in workplaces as it plays a key role in the effective performance of employees. In industry, managers play a significant role in employee motivation. They use different motivation techniques to improve productivity, thereby promoting cooperation between employees and employers.

Learning is somewhat interrelated to motivation. In education, instructors also use motivation techniques in order to motivate the students to learn. It is essential to increase student motivation as it can make a student more competent. Also, motivation encourages self confidence and problem-solving skills.
